How TV placement is calculated
There are two numbers to get right: mount height (vertical position on the wall) and viewing distance (how far to sit). Both follow industry standards from SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) and THX.
Mount height: Centre of screen at viewer's eye level when seated.
Viewing distance: TV diagonal × 1.6 (SMPTE 4K) to × 2.5 (mixed-use).
Viewing distance: TV diagonal × 1.6 (SMPTE 4K) to × 2.5 (mixed-use).
Mount height by TV diagonal
| TV size | Screen height | Centre at floor (sofa) | Bottom of TV |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43" | ~21" | 42" | ~32" |
| 55" | ~27" | 42" | ~29" |
| 65" | ~32" | 42" | ~26" |
| 75" | ~37" | 42" | ~24" |
| 85" | ~42" | 42" | ~21" |
Viewing distance by standard
| Standard | Multiplier | For 65" TV | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| THX (cinema) | × 1.2 | ~6.5 ft | Immersive movies |
| SMPTE 4K | × 1.6 | ~8.5 ft | 4K content, premium |
| Mixed (default) | × 2.0 | ~10.8 ft | Mixed TV / streaming |
| Casual | × 2.5 | ~13.5 ft | Background / multiple use |
Common installation mistakes
- Mounted too high — biggest mistake. TV above the fireplace forces head-tilt, strains neck.
- Sitting too far — defeats 4K resolution. You can't see the detail beyond a certain distance.
- Sitting too close — you see pixels and have to constantly move your eyes.
- Wrong viewing angle — Off-axis viewing >30° degrades picture especially on LCD panels.
Frequently asked questions
How high should I mount a 65 inch TV?
For a 65 inch TV with seated viewing on a standard sofa, the centre of the screen should be at 42 inches (107 cm) from the floor. That puts the bottom of the TV at about 26 inches (66 cm) and the top at 58 inches (147 cm).
What is the optimal TV viewing distance?
SMPTE recommends viewing distance = TV size × 1.6 for 4K (immersive cinema view). THX recommends × 1.2 to × 1.5. For mixed content use × 2 (e.g. 130 inches / 11 ft for a 65 inch TV).
How far to sit from a 55 inch TV?
Optimal distance for a 55 inch 4K TV is 7.3 ft (88 inches / SMPTE) to 9.2 ft (110 inches / mixed). Don't sit closer than 5.5 ft or further than 12 ft.
Should the TV be at eye level?
Yes — the centre of the screen should be at the viewer's eye level when seated. For most sofas this means 42 inches (107 cm) from the floor to centre. Tilting up to look at a TV strains the neck over long viewing.
Can I mount the TV above the fireplace?
Generally no — it's the most common mistake. The mantel typically sits 48–54 inches up, which puts the TV centre at 60+ inches and forces 15–20° upward neck tilt. If you must, use a tilting mount and accept it's not ergonomic.
What size TV for a 12 ft viewing distance?
At 12 ft (144 inches), the SMPTE 4K formula gives 144 ÷ 1.6 = 90 inch TV for full immersion. For mixed content use ÷ 2 = 72 inch (around a 75 inch model). Don't go smaller than 65 inch at this distance.
