Rug Size Calculator — What size for any room

Pick your room type and furniture, get the recommended rug dimensions instantly. Avoid the most common rug-sizing mistake (rug too small + furniture floats awkwardly).

Quick answer

Rug rule of thumb: Living room — extend at least under front sofa legs (8×10 ft for most). Bedroom — extend 24" past bed sides and foot (9×12 ft for king). Dining — extend 24" past table edges so chair legs stay on rug.

How rug size is determined

Rug sizing follows three simple rules per room type — applied to the largest piece of furniture, not the room. Room dimensions only matter as a maximum boundary (leave 12–18 inches of bare floor as a border).

Living room rules

  • All-on rug: Every furniture leg sits on the rug — most luxurious look. Needs 9×12 or larger.
  • Front-legs-on rug: Front legs of sofa and accent chairs on rug, back legs off — most common. 8×10 works.
  • Floating rug: Rug only under coffee table — works only in tiny spaces, looks cheap if room is large.

Bedroom rules

  • Rug should extend at least 24 inches past the bed on the sides and foot.
  • Bedside tables either sit on the rug or just off it (both work).
  • Two runners on each side of the bed is an alternative for tight rooms.

Dining room rules

  • Rug should extend 24–30 inches past the table on every side so chair legs stay on the rug when pulled out.
  • Round table = round rug or square rug at least table diameter + 48 inches.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug for a king bed?
For a king bed (78×72 inches), use a 9×12 ft rug positioned to extend at least 24 inches past the sides and foot of the bed. An 8×10 ft works for tighter spaces; 10×14 ft for grand bedrooms.
What size rug for a queen bed?
For a queen bed (78×60 inches), use an 8×10 ft rug — extends about 24 inches past the sides and foot. A 6×9 ft works at the foot of the bed only (without going under).
What size rug for a 12x15 living room?
For a 12×15 ft living room, an 8×10 ft rug fits the front-legs-on-rug rule. For a more grounded look use a 9×12 ft so all sofa, accent chair and coffee table legs sit on the rug.
What size rug for a 6-seater dining table?
For a 6-seater dining table (about 36×72 inches), use a 9×12 ft rug — extends 30 inches on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
Can a rug be too big?
Yes — leave at least 12–18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. A wall-to-wall rug looks like carpet. The bare-floor border is what defines the rug as a rug.
